Harvey Rotary Recycling Regatta
... sailing towards a sustainable future ...
Making a craft from recyclable drink containers and coloured gaffa-style tape (only) is relatively easy.
Seeing it float is also relatively easy given that they’re sealed empty containers, and each container would normally float in its own right.
Ensuring it will carry at least one person to travel over 50 metres using provided kayak paddles is a significant challenge, and loads of fun to watch.
What can you use to build your craft ?
1. Any recyclable (non-glass) empty drink container that is not modified (ie not cut up)
2. Any coloured gaffa-style tape
Some examples of Drink Containers
Suggested steps
-
Gather your containers
-
Rinse the containers out with fresh water and seal the top, either with a bottle top or the coloured gaffa-style tape only (we don’t want any drink residue to enter the pool water).
-
Either remove any paper or plastic labels or seal them securely with the gaffa-style tape (labels can damage the pool filter if they come off your craft)
-
Build your craft using only the allowable containers and coloured gaffa-style tape. The use of glue or silicone of any type will result in disqualification. (Coloured gaffa-style tape is to be used so that we can easily see and remove any broken down craft from the water—clear tape can’t be easily seen and may damage the pool filter)
-
Make sure your craft measures a maximum of 1 metre x 2 metres.
-
Remember that your crew must be able to either take the craft home complete or deconstruct it and place the containers in the appropriate bins. No tape can be left on the containers.

Note : if you win, your craft will be dismantled by scrutineers before the presentations to ensure only gaffa tape and drink containers have been used.
